The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today flagged off Vande Bharat Express connecting Nagpur and Bilaspur from platform number 1 of Nagpur Railway Station.

The Prime Minister inspected the train coaches of the Vande Bharat Express and took stock of the onboard facilities. Shri Modi inspected the locomotive engine control center of Vande Bharat Express and also took stock of the development plans of Nagpur and Ajni railway stations. Travel time from Nagpur to Bilaspur will be reduced from 7-8 hours to 5 hours 30 minutes.

The Prime Minister tweeted:

“Vande Bharat Express flagged off between Nagpur and Bilaspur. Connectivity will increase significantly with this train.”

The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Eknath Shinde, the Governor of Maharashtra Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis and the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari when he reached Nagpur Railway Station.


The introduction of the train will boost tourism in the region and provide a comfortable and faster mode of travel. The travel time from Nagpur to Bilaspur will be 5 hours 30 minutes. This will be the sixth Vande Bharat train to be introduced in the country and is an improved version than the earlier ones, which is much lighter and capable of reaching higher speeds in a shorter duration. Vande Bharat 2.0 is equipped with more advanced and improved features, such as accelerating from 0 to 100 kmph in just 52 seconds and reaching a top speed of 180 kmph. The upgraded Vande Bharat Express will weigh 392 tonnes as compared to the previous version’s 430 tonnes. It will also have Wi-Fi content on demand facility. Each coach has 32” screens providing information and infotainment to passengers as compared to 24” in the previous version. Vande Bharat Express will also be environment friendly as the ACs will be 15 per cent more energy efficient. With dust-free clean air cooling of the traction motor, the journey will become more comfortable. The facility of side recliner seat, earlier offered only to executive class passengers, will now be made available to all classes. The executive coach has the added feature of 180 degree reclining seats.

In the new design of Vande Bharat Express, a photo-catalytic ultraviolet air purification system has been installed in the Roof-Mounted Package Unit (RMPU) for air purification. As recommended by Central Scientific Instruments Organization (CSIO), Chandigarh, this system is designed and installed at both the ends of RMPU to filter incoming air free from germs, bacteria, virus etc. through fresh air and return air. and can be cleaned.

Vande Bharat Express 2.0 offers various improved and aircraft like travel experience. The train is equipped with advanced state-of-the-art safety features including indigenously developed Collision Avoidance System – Kavach.
