The Best Camera Smartphone of 2022

In the year 2022, when travel and travel wishlists boom again, it’s a good thing our smartphone cameras have kept up with improvements in low-light photography and new computational photography tricks. More smartphones stepped up their zoom photography game as smartphone photography got better and aimed to narrow the gap with pro cams. Here, we give a round-up of the best mobile shooters we’ve tested this year, in case you need a tip or two on choosing the right smartphone for your end-of-the-year holiday.

Google Pixel 7 Pro

Google Pixel 7 Pro All

It’s been a while since Google launched a flagship smartphone in India. The rear camera of the 2022 flagship shows us what we missed. While high-quality low-light images are delivered with Google’s Night Vision, the Pixel 7 Pro also excels at zoom photography with its 48MP telephoto lens (you can shoot up to 5x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom). And, then, there are Google smart features like Photo Unblur that allows you to fix images (even those shot on other devices) and Magic Eraser to eliminate annoying photo bombers.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra opt 2

Our favorite Android shooter of the year with the Pixel 7 Pro. The Ultra relies on computational photography more than its more capable predecessors for better results in low light and portrait images. It’s the best zoom lens on any smartphone in India (up to 10x on optical zoom mode and up to 100x on digital zoom), just what you need for those wildlife expeditions. The 40MP selfie shooter specializes in selfie portraits while Samsung’s S-Pen, the versatile stylus makes video editing a breeze.

The 2022 Pro model becomes the first iPhone to include a 48MP main camera that gets leg-up from the quad-pixel sensor. It adapts to the image being captured, and features second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization. Photos and videos are better viewed in low light.

It is the ultra-wide lens that is the killer feature on the 2022 OnePlus flagship. The cam comes with a 150-degree view on its ultra-lens that also offers a fish-eye lens for a unique perspective just like its 2021 predecessor, the 10 Pro cam developed with iconic Swedish photography brand Hasselblad Is. Xiaomi 12 Pro

Xiaomi 12 Pro

Xiaomi’s mobile cameras have made steady strides, the 12 Pro being one example. The 12 Pro offers a versatile camera experience for its asking price. The primary lens has a Sony IMX 707 sensor. The special thing about this device is that all three 50MP lenses (including the ultra-wide lens and telephoto lens) come with Night Mode. Xiaomi’s Ultra Night photo mode is the headline feature of the device and produces great lowlight images thanks to upgraded HDR and highlight control.

Vivo X80 Pro

Vivo X80 Pro

The rear cam for Vivo’s 2022 India flagship has been designed in collaboration with Zeiss. Vivo has touted the company’s T* lens coating that reduces glare and reflections. It delivers great results in low light scenarios; It uses HDR to equalize bright light in dim light scenarios. You also get a bunch of Zeiss add-ons including our favorite Cinematic Video mode with a wide aspect ratio and a bokeh effect at 24fps. The portrait lens benefits from in-built gimbal stabilization.

Realme GT2 Pro

Realme Gt2 Pro

Packed with a whole bag of camera tricks. The rear shooter combines two 50MP sensors including an ultra-wide lens that allows you to capture images with a 150-degree field of view. We dig into the third lens – a 3MP microscope sensor that allows you to get in close with 40X magnification and take macro photography to the extreme. There is also Realme’s Street Mode with several curated filters.

OPPO Reno 8 Pro

OPPO 2

The 32MP selfie shooter is one of the talking points of Oppo’s 2022 flagship. We enjoyed the Bokeh effect while taking selfies. The rear houses a 50MP primary lens along with an 8MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP macro lens. OPPO is boosting the portrait capabilities of this device. It benefits from Oppo’s Turbo RAW algorithm that automatically detects and removes noise when shooting in low light. The 4K Ultra Night feature is another win.
